Shaolin Xin Yi Ba

Shaolin Xin Yi Ba

The various styles of Chinese Martial Arts (chin.: Zhongguo Gongfu 中國功夫) are very often classified into the hard or external arts and soft or internal arts. Very commonly it is believed that Shaolin Wu Gong and all its derivates belong to the hard or external arts.

However, hard and soft, or internal (chin.: nei 内) and external (chin.: wai 外), are arbitrary terms. Yet, Shaolin Wu Gong (chin.: Shàolínwǔgōng 少林武功) is regarded as external because in a performance it is most likely to see the fast, external movements of the techniques and the hard force, such as breaking bricks, etc. In Shaolin training, internal and external are both interrelated.

One well protected Art in the Shaolin Buddhist tradition is the Art of the Heart and Mind; known as Shaolin Xin Yi Ba (chin.: Shàolínxīnyìbǎ 少林心意把). This rare art of Shaolin Monastery Masters still exists as part of the Buddhist Tradition of the Shaolin Temple (chin.: shifa 師法) and is known as one of the highest levels of Shaolin Wugong.
