The importance of speech in the context of Buddhist ethics is obvious:
words can break or save lives, make enemies or friends, start war or create peace.

Buddha explained right speech as follows:

1. to abstain from false speech, especially not to tell deliberate lies
2. to abstain from slanderous speech and not to use words against others
3. to abstain from harsh words that offend or hurt others
4. to abstain from idle chatter that lacks purpose or depth.

As a newcomer to the study of Buddhist teachings I am able to comprehend some of the content in this article by His Holiness. I can accept The Noble Eightfold Path will lead to the elimination of suffering caused by the human actions and conditions discribed within some of the “easier” verses I have chosen , e.g.

In all actions may I search my mind,
And as soon as delusions arise
That endanger myself and others,
May I firmly face and avert them.

When others out of envy treat me badly
With slander, abuse and the like,
May I suffer the loss and
Offer the victory to them.

When the one whom I have helped
And benefited with great hope
Hurts me badly, may I behold him
As my supreme guru.

Are these not conditions we all experience sometimes while on our journey through life? I do.

Each and every day great comfort and many benefits are to be found in the Buddhist teachings available from sources such as the one by His Holiness being discussed in this thread.  Is this perhaps one step toward developing a state of mind in keeping with studying Buddhism?.

With the determination to accomplish
The highest welfare of all sentient beings,
Who excel even the wish-fulfilling jewel,
May I at all times hold them dear.

“I vow to save all sentient beings. Helping others to put an end to their suffering is acting compassionately.”

Whenever I associate with others
May I think of myself as the lowest of all
And from the depth of my heart
Hold the others as supreme.

“See the unity of all things. Self and other are one. If your right hand is caught in a fire, wouldn’t you use your left hand to pull it out?”

In all actions may I search my mind,
And as soon as delusions arise
That endanger myself and others,
May I firmly face and avert them.

“Using your mind to observe reality from various viewpoints is Body and Mind dropping away and waking up to the ten thousand things.”

When I see beings of wicked nature,
Oppressed by violent misdeeds and afflictions,
May I hold them dear
As if I had found a rare precious treasure.

“Learning is not a linear path. We make many mistakes along the way. If we are extremely fortunate, we avoid the traps that ensnare others. Helping others is simply seeing Self and Other as One.”

When others out of envy treat me badly
With slander, abuse and the like,
May I suffer the loss and
Offer the victory to them.

“Don’t think making yourself a doormat is compassion. Sometimes a swift kick in the ass is the best medicine. Do not get caught up being a martyr. Be careful of what is being said here.”

When the one whom I have helped
And benefited with great hope
Hurts me badly, may I behold him
As my supreme guru.

Everyone is my teacher. The simple disease of the mind is discrimination. The great way is easy if you don’t pick and choose. Jesus said Love your enemies. Now that is real practice.”

In short, may I directly and indirectly offer
Benefit and happiness to all my mothers.
May I secretly take upon myself the harmful actions
And suffering of my mothers.

“How compassionate to set right the mis-actions of others. To clearly see that victims and victimizers are interelated.”

May all this remain undefiled by the stains of
Keeping in view the eight worldly principles.
May I, by perceiving all phenomena as illusory,
Unattached, be delivered from the bondage of samsara.

Living a Buddhist life. Following the eight fold path, clearly seeing the nature of though, letting go of the smaller self and not separating from the larger picture. Standing at the center, the axle is still, the wheel revolves around.”

I hope this helps. May your life go well.
