The importance of speech in the context of Buddhist ethics is obvious:
words can break or save lives, make enemies or friends, start war or create peace.

Buddha explained right speech as follows:

1. to abstain from false speech, especially not to tell deliberate lies
2. to abstain from slanderous speech and not to use words against others
3. to abstain from harsh words that offend or hurt others
4. to abstain from idle chatter that lacks purpose or depth.

The language of the humanity

I will not speak of the language of the humanity in connection with its physical and organic conditions, also not of the variety, the richness and the fullness of its possibility of expression, not of its privileged state in the choir of the voice in the universe.

The German language has a word, leading to the point, where human voice changes in divine voice: Gewissen (conscience). If the rhythm of human forces of feeling and mind will come disorder, then god is speaking to the men in this language.

Many, too many of us have not wanted to hear and learn it. The experience is at it is. Many of us have learned it in lectures extraordinary and difficult. They know the serious and paternal voice; they know the helplessness, the state of mind, which is like a mask of the deaf and dumb, who does not hear and speak entirely the human language.

Many, too many of us have lived as deaf and dumb men. The wonderful success of men’s thinking and energy, at the large domain of technical and chemical works had made them perplexed and hopelessly, had confused the rhythm of their hearts and minds. They were driven by the meanest and greediest instincts in the whirlpool of absolute deafness and blindness.

Time has come, that the connoisseur of both languages, of the human and divine, must speak freely and openly.

We must not become again deaf and dumb men (Gewissenlose – unscrupulously men). Otherwise our existence as men is done for.

Also the picture of the eternal vigorous language, human and divine – that means the history of nations – are more than an interesting field of ruins, of destroyed cultures. It is the monumental document of the language imperfect and without conscience (unscrupulous = gewissenlos) and of the language with conscience (conscientious = gewissenhaft).

Namaste Dharma brother.

The true nature of all phenomena is that all phenomena are signless as they are empty of any permanent self-identity, such as self, soul or intrinsic nature. The worldlings are obsessed by the illusive and unreal signs of all phenomena. In the ultimate sense, all phenomena are empty of signs. The worldlings are perverse because their conventional view of all phenomena are contradictory to the right view of signlessness or insubstantiality.

Since time immemorial, the ignorant worldlings are obsessed with signs due to ontological commitment to everything. The pleasant or agreeable objects, perceived substantially, arouse their attachment and greed.

Likewise, the unpleasant or disagreeable objects kindle their aversion giving rise to the emotion of anger or hatred. Their ignorance of the true nature of multiplicity deludes them and obstructs their ethical development as human beings.

It is important to bear in mind that one must not be attached to rituals, words or even Chan sitting.  True Chan means to cut off all thinking and to keep non-moving mind.  True Chan means to become clear.
